At the Tri-City Warriors, we are committed to upholding the highest standards of coach certification, football fundamentals, and emergency preparedness to ensure a safe and educational environment for every player. Our primary responsibility is to provide a secure space where young athletes can develop their skills and grow within the Warriors program.
Early participation in our program allows athletes to build a solid foundation in key skills such as throwing, catching, running, and footwork at a lower-intensity level.
This approach facilitates safer learning of these essential fundamentals before advancing to higher speeds and more intense physical demands. It’s a win-win: players develop critical skills while their bodies are still growing. Our focus is on teaching correct techniques consistently, rather than rushing through the process. Coaches place significant emphasis on developing muscle memory that athletes will carry with them from one practice to the next and across seasons.
Before parent coaches or assistants can take the field, they must meet the following requirements:
1) complete a background check (link provided by Tri-City Warriors);
2) obtain CPR certification;
3) achieve certification with USA Tackle Football (annual certification is required).
Online CPR certification courses are available through the Red Cross and other providers. All certifications are mandatory, with no exceptions. CPR and USA Tackle Football certifications typically take approximately 3-4 hours to complete. These steps are critical to maintaining a safe environment for both players and parents. While many parents volunteer for a single practice, they must also be certified in all three areas. Parent volunteers for game-day roles (e.g., MPRs, videographers, chain gang, etc.) are not required to hold certifications.
Positive and Motivated: Foster an environment where every player feels motivated and eager to return each day.
Coach to the Individual: Focus on helping each young player grow and develop into the best version of themselves.
Build Community: Establish open communication, transparency, and trust with parents, as these are essential to both individual player and team success.
Strive for Excellence, While Having Fun: We set high standards for player development, but always ensure the experience remains enjoyable.
During the first full week of practice, players will be required to wear helmets, practice jerseys, shorts, cleats, and mouthpieces. Please note that no physical contact is allowed during this week, with the primary focus on skill development and conditioning.
Players must complete a minimum of 10 hours of practice in helmets before they can be cleared to wear full pads in Week 2.
Practices will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. While most players typically arrive between 5:15 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., this time is used for coaches to communicate the practice agenda and set up stations.
The first week of practice can be hectic, with several hundred athletes across the J-PW, PW, JV, and Varsity teams. We understand that helmets may need adjustments and that some players may forget certain items. The most commonly misplaced item is the mouthpiece, so we recommend checking all necessary gear before arriving.
As coaches, we will not have the final roster for approximately 2-3 weeks, as each player is being evaluated for readiness for the competitive team. During this time, it is our responsibility to ensure a positive experience for all players, motivating them to grow and develop with the TriCity Warriors.
In Week 2 will become more difficult. Full contact introduces significant changes in player attitudes, confidence, and motivation.
During Weeks 2-3, we focus on teaching players how to safely take contact, form tackle, and protect themselves. TriCity Warriors players will begin with basic tackling techniques using tackling bags while on their knees, progress to stationary tackling on their feet, and eventually practice tackling while moving. This "crawl, walk, run" approach ensures players gain confidence and skill in proper tackling techniques, preparing them for contact with teammates.
From the formation of teams in late July to the league-wide Jamboree in mid-August, we will have approximately three weeks of daily practices, five days a week.
During our first week of breakout practices, we focus on introducing variations to keep skill stations engaging and fresh for the players. While repetition at skill stations is crucial for mastery, incorporating variation is equally important to maintain player interest and avoid monotony.
For inspiration, we draw from USA Football drills, carefully planning these exercises in advance to ensure that our TriCity Warriors coaches establish a successful and dynamic cadence for skill development.
The Jamboree is a fast-paced scrimmage held over two hours. Each TriCity Warriors team will play three 20-minute mini-games. Each game consists of 8 minutes of running clock offense, followed by a 4-minute break, and then 8 minutes of running clock defense.
There are no timeouts and no special teams (punts, kickoffs, or returns) during the Jamboree. The goal is to maximize the number of plays run.
All teams will wear practice jerseys (no game jerseys) for this event.
The week following the Jamboree, we will transition to a three-practice per week schedule (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday) in preparation for the first game.
This will result in a more condensed practice schedule. While tackling is still incorporated into our Offense practices, it is conducted at a lower intensity to ensure player safety and development.
Game times, schedules, and locations can often be the most unpredictable aspect of your TriCity Warriors experience. Coaches will receive an initial season schedule in early to mid-August.
However, we set the expectation with parents that schedules are subject to change, primarily due to adjustments in securing field locations across the East Bay Area through the EBYFC.
Coaches generally advise parents to arrive two hours before the scheduled game kickoff. For a 9:00 AM game, this means players should arrive by 7:00 AM, allowing for any delays caused by traffic or late arrivals.
Additionally, each TriCity Warriors Head Coach is responsible for reviewing the opposing team's roster prior to each game. Coaches carry a binder with EBYFC-certified player cards, which serve as each player's "pass" to participate in the game each week.
Once our players are fully dressed, we generally aim for a 45-minute pre-game warm-up on the field. The exact duration may vary depending on the scheduled game time and whether there is a prior game taking place on the same field.
We recognize that getting our teams fully prepared can take time, as players occasionally forget essential gear such as integrated pad pants, helmets, jerseys, shoulder pads, mouthpieces, and more.
Therefore, allowing ample time for preparation and warm-up before the game is crucial for ensuring the team is ready and focused.
Games consist of four 10-minute quarters. All EBYFC teams follow a Minimum Play Requirement (MPR) format. This means that each player must participate in a minimum number of plays, as tracked by pre-designated parent volunteers, before the end of the fourth quarter.
Starting in 2025, the MPR will be determined based on team size. For example, a team with 15 to 23 players may require each player to participate in at least 12 plays per game.
If a team fails to meet these requirements by the end of the game, the opposing team will win by default. This rule is a core EBYFC policy designed to promote fair play and ensure that all young athletes have equitable development opportunities.
MPR play count guidelines are reviewed with all coaches prior to the start of the season to ensure clarity and adherence.

After each skill session, which typically lasts 20-30 minutes, players are given a brief 5-minute water break. We keep water breaks as short as possible to maintain momentum while setting up for the next activity.
Game volunteers play a crucial role in the success of the TriCity Warriors. We require all parents to contribute 12 volunteer hours throughout the season to help support the team’s operations. This is essential for ensuring the smooth running of our program. Please sign up for your volunteer hours as soon as possible.
